Thrill of the Hunt is the originator behind the dog scavenger hunts. Really? Yes! We created a dog scavenger hunt, an activity for dogs and their owners.
We’re asked a lot of questions behind these events, like “Do the dogs sniff out the clues?” and “Are dogs allowed on the scavenger hunt?” and “How does this work?” To explain, let’s start at the beginning.
How Did It Begin?
While Thrill of the Hunt was in its infancy stages as a company, we began offering public scavenger hunt events. Keep in mind, Thrill of the Hunt loves dogs! It only seemed natural for us to develop a unique dog scavenger hunt themed around dogs, which also allowed dogs to join. Thrill of the Hunt is also very family oriented, so it also makes sense to allow family and friends to share in the adventure. We wanted to create an event that welcomed dogs to socialize with other dogs and dog owners of like interest, yet maintained the fun and excitement of a scavenger hunt. And so the dog scavenger hunt events were born.
Thrill of the Hunt offers two types of dog scavenger hunts, 1) a Thrill of the Hunt hosted event and 2) a self hosted event by an organization, city or business, which commissions Thrill of the Hunt.
Our public events are organized by Thrill of the Hunt, whereas we pick the location, the theme, set the number of tickets sold, usually dictated by the city or area, and we sell tickets, which are open to the public.
Thrill of the Hunt always accepts requests for specific areas or themed scavenger hunts. The requests don’t have to be dog related. We offer kids scavenger hunts, decade themed events such as the 80s, physical fitness types of scavenger hunts and so on.
Thrill of the Hunt will research the request, and if we bring the scavenger hunt to the suggested area, the person who submitted the request will receive 2 free tickets to the event.
Sometimes a business would like to team up with Thrill of the Hunt. If they suggest an event, and Thrill of the Hunt moves forward with the request, then that sponsor will receive special privileges and discounts, too.
Suggest an Event! It’s free and Thrill of the Hunt might bring an event to you.
The private events are simply organizations or businesses that commission Thrill of the Hunt to build and administer the scavenger hunt. The organization selects the venue, the permits and dates and the theme. Thrill of the Hunt is always on hand to assist.
These events aren’t necessarily private by invitation only. If the organization chooses, they may sell tickets to the scavenger hunt event. Again, Thrill of the Hunt is on hand to walk them through the process and offer assistance and suggestions.
Going off the public event model, since the private scavenger hunts each have their own requirements, Thrill of the Hunt has a standard process. Everyone purchases a ticket, some events require a ticket per person, while some are per dog. Check with the specific event for details.
The participants are encouraged to wear their favorite walking shoes, and dress appropriately according to the weather. Each location is different, some scavenger hunts may total a mile or two, depending on how the scavenger hunt is tackled by the participant. The majority of the events are held outside, with some inside exploration, rain or shine. It’s always a good idea to bring extra water for both the dog and the dog owner, in the case of hot humid weather.
All dogs must be well-behaved and on a leash at all times, and all dog owners must clean up after their 4-legged pal. These are requirements, no exceptions. Failure to comply will result in removal from the scavenger hunt, without refund and possibly band from future events.
Thrill of the Hunt designs each scavenger hunt differently, although we do have a standard flow to our events. The scavenger hunts typically drive each participant to specific onsite locations, throughout a designed area, allowing you to walk your dog and have quality time. The participants (Thrill Seekers) have a list of clues to figure out, either via a scorecard or through an app.
Once each location has been uncovered, the Thrill Seeker will collect a dog treat, toy, coupon or business promotional item before moving to the next clue. At this point, all participants are required to complete the online challenges and sometimes a trivia type of challenge.
The challenge can be a puzzle, multiple choice, a fun fact etc. The social or online challenge almost always includes a picture or video to be posted. Sometimes it’s as simple as posting the correct answer online using hashtag #ThrillofHunt or the hashtag supplied by the private organizer.
Thrill of the Hunt offers our dog scavenger hunts from spring throughout the summer, into fall. We try and plan for the best possible weather, for the participants and their dogs alike. Most scavenger hunts begin in May, although depending on the location, we adjust to the anticipated weather conditions.
October is a big dog scavenger hunt month. Why? The Doggie in Disguise Scavenger Hunt events are hugely popular for the Halloween theme. The dog owners are encouraged to dress in costume, including their 4-legged friend, for costume contests and prizes.
Dog Scavenger Hunt for Businesses / Charities / Communities
A dog scavenger hunt is an excellent fundraiser, especially for animal shelters and rescues. Also, those pet magazines and pet brands, and dog friendly communities could use the dog scavenger hunts as a vehicle to increase adoptions and animal awareness.
Dog scavenger hunts are not limited to pet brands and pet companies. They’re also perfect as a company team building activity, for those dog friendly businesses. What a great way to build comrade than through a team building event that includes the employees’ pups! Now that’s unique.
Where Are Dog Scavenger Hunts Offered?
Thrill of the Hunt offers our public events all over the nation, at specific dog friendly communities and cities. This is certainly a requirement for obvious reasons. While participants can partake in the dog scavenger hunt without their dog, it’s way more fun with their best pal by their side.
This year, Thrill of the Hunt is offering our scavenger hunts from the east coast, Annapolis, Maryland, to the west coast, San Diego, California. For a complete list of events, visit our Events page. Check back, we’re always updating and adding more events as the year unfolds, and as requests are researched and planned.
Thrill of the Hunt wants to maintain the integrity of dog friendly communities and businesses, and we’d like to see more of those areas.
Thrill of the Hunt offers sponsorship opportunities for bigger national brands and smaller “mom and pop” shops. We want to help the local businesses.
Sponsorship opportunities are as involved as being an actual stop on the scavenger hunt to drive guaranteed direct traffic to the merchants doorstep. Some sponsorship options are more branding with signage, ads, and social media to increase the brand or company’s online footprint. Perhaps your organization or business simply wants to educate the 100% dog owner audience? Thrill of the Hunt offers an education hour, that can also be included on the scavenger hunt.
With each Thrill of the Hunt public dog scavenger hunt event, Thrill of the Hunt will donate a portion of the proceeds to a local animal rescue or dog charity or organization. Our donations are always given locally, in close proximity to the event. We never donate on national levels. Usually if a sponsor for the event has a preference, we’ll look into the organization and donate based on their recommendation.
